Structural and Semantic Aspects of the English Sports Term System

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to comprehensively study the specifics of English neologisms in the socio-cultural sphere of "sport" formed in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Achieving the goal of the work involves the following tasks: 1) to study the history, current state, and origins of neology, which studies linguistic neologisms; 2) to consider the stages of development of neologisms, the criteria for their selection and existing classifications of neologisms; 3) to describe the ways of formation of neologisms in English; 4) to find out the socio-cultural spheres of appearance of English neologisms at the turn of the century; to describe their composition and functions; 5) to clarify the role and functions of neologisms of the socio-cultural sphere of "sport" and to demonstrate the relevance of the study of neologisms of this socio-cultural sphere, namely on the example of their borrowings into other languages.
