dc.description.abstract The work is devoted to the urgent problem of determining the regularities of the functioning of verbal stress in Ukrainian and English languages. Modern approaches to defining the concept of stress are considered. The emphasis in linguistics is the highlighting with the help of one or another phonetic means - strengthening the voice, raising the tone (a sharp change in the intonation curve) in combination with an increase in the duration, intensity and volume of the pronunciation - of one of the syllables in the structure of a word or a whole phrase. It is noted that the leading factors in the functioning of stress in the modern Ukrainian language are reasons of an internal nature. These include formal analogy, the joint action of semantic-morphological, prototypical and rhythmic factors, the relationship of recessive and rhythmic tendencies, the rhythmic factor, the constituent structure of a word, the tempo of speech. en_US
