Abstract:
The research on the topic «Language means of expressing modality in Modern English and Ukrainian» is dedicated to the analysis of the ways of expressing the category of modality in English and Ukrainian language cultures. The course work consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusions to each chapter, general conclusions, a résumé, a list of references and a list of sources of illustrative material. The first chapter, «Theoretical Foundations of Modality Research» («Теоретичні засади дослідження модальності») covers theoretical issues. It focuses on the basic concept of modality, the problems of its interpretation. The primary emphasis is placed on the principles of functioning of the category of modality in a sentence, in particular, based on communicative syntax.
The second chapter «Language Means of Expressing Modality in Modern English and Ukrainian» («Мовні засоби вираження модальності в сучасній англійській і українських мовах») represents a practical study. It offers an analysis of the peculiarities of expressing modality in the English and Ukrainian languages on the basis of illustrative material selected from contemporary English and Ukrainian-language works of fiction. A comparative analysis of the different means of expressing modality in both languages is provided. This part of the paper identifies some similarities and differences between them.
